When Barbie Meets Oppenheimer: Margot Robbie and Cillian Murphy Discuss Their Blockbuster Hits in Epic ‘Barbenheimer’ Conversation

Margot Robbie and Cillian Murphy — she the star of “Barbie,” he of “Oppenheimer” — have shared an experience, one unique in film history. On July 21, 2023, their two movies came out, and instead of cannibalizing one another during a time when box office receipts were sluggish, they actually boosted each other, creating the global phenomenon known as “Barbenheimer.”

On paper, the two movies couldn’t be more different. Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” produced by Robbie’s company LuckyChap Entertainment, is the story of the world’s most popular doll, who, after going on a journey to recover from an existential crisis, becomes a woman; Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” is a biopic about J. Robert Oppenheimer, the physicist who oversaw the invention of the atomic bomb. What they have in common, though, is that their directors made wholly original films, ones guided by their inventiveness, and it was the innovative spirit of “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie” that in turn inspired audiences to be creative and participatory in their fandom for both films. The memes, the double-feature TikToks, the costumes people wore to go out to theaters again and again to experience Barbenheimer — after COVID had nearly destroyed in-person moviegoing — “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” proved joy is still to be had (as well as profits, with the box office for “Barbie” at more than $1.4 billion worldwide, and “Oppenheimer” recently crossing $950 million).

Barbiemania! Margot Robbie Opens Up About the Movie Everyone’s Waiting For

Margot Robbie wasn’t a Barbie fanatic as a child. She’s not even sure she owned a Barbie. “I don’t think I did,” she tells me one morning over breakfast in Venice Beach. “I know my cousin had a bunch of Barbies, and I’d go to her house.” Growing up on Australia’s Gold Coast, Robbie spent a lot of time outside. She and her cousin would make mud pies. They’d play with trucks. And they’d play with Barbies. Mostly they’d build forts, “cubbies” to an Australian. “Building cubbies was what we did all day, every day.”

Margot on Getting Ready for the Met Gala

Vogue interviewed Margot to discuss her 2023 Met Gala look! Take a look at the photos and article below.

“I Knew It Was the One”: Margot Robbie On Getting Ready for the 2023 Met Gala

Margot Robbie was one of the many guests at this year’s Met Gala who wore black, but her gown boasted a special historical significance.

The theme of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual extravaganza, one that asked guests to come dressed “in honor of Karl Lagerfeld” to celebrate the Costume Institute’s newest exhibition, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”, saw attendees draw from various sources of inspiration. Present were the details that Lagerfeld included so often in his designs at Chloé, Fendi and especially Chanel, from chains and ribbons to Chanel’s signature camellias. Attendees also nodded to elements of Lagerfeld’s distinctive, monochrome uniform: sunglasses, ties and fingerless motorcycle gloves.

That the 32-year-old Robbie therefore, a longtime ambassador of Chanel, would attend the Met Gala in a piece from the house archives was somewhat inevitable. She chose a black silk chiffon gown with plastic and gold chain detailing at the waist, first worn by Cindy Crawford as part of Chanel’s haute couture spring 1993 collection. Stylist Andrew Mukamal accessorized the look simply: no necklace, just diamonds on the ears and fingers.

It was an elegance that was echoed in Robbie’s beauty look, which came courtesy of make-up artist Pati Dubroff. “My inspiration for tonight’s look is clean, glowy, fresh and heightened perfection,” explained Dubroff to Vogue as Robbie was getting ready. “I wanted to achieve a shine to mimic her Chanel dress.”

Margot Robbie Dials Up the Chaos

Star power, that hard-to-define magic possessed by a handful of humans, is something Margot Robbie has in abundance. In Babylon, she channels every ounce of it in her portrayal of Nellie LaRoy, a silent-film actor at the center of a messy, decadent era in Hollywood. Here, Robbie talks about how connected she felt with the role—and how disconnected she feels from her astrological sign.
