LuckyChap to Adapt Comic “Avengelyne”

Olivia Wilde, Margot Robbie to Adapt Comic ‘Avengelyne’ From ‘Deadpool’ Creator

VARIETY – Olivia Wilde, Margot Robbie and “X-Men” producer Simon Kinberg are joining forces for a feature adaptation of “Avengelyne,” a comic book character from “Deadpool” co-creator Rob Liefeld.

Wilde, whose filmmaking credits include “Booksmart” and “Don’t Worry Darling,” is attached to direct. Robbie’s company LuckyChap and her partners Tom Ackerley and Josie McNamara are producing. Kinberg, a writer and producer of “X-Men” tentpoles, will also produce the film.

The project doesn’t have a home yet, so the creative team will try to sell the film to studios and streamers in the coming weeks. It’s unclear who will play Avengelyne, an angel who fights the forces of evil and often finds herself face-to-face with demons and monsters. Rob Liefeld, best known for bringing to life the Merc with a Mouth, a.k.a. Deadpool, co-created the character of Avengelyne in 1995.

There were prior attempts to turn Avengelyne into a big-screen star, but they never got off the ground. In 2013, Gina Carano was attached to star in an adaptation. In 2016, Paramount reportedly nabbed rights for a version from filmmaker Akiva Goldsman.

LuckyChap has been in high demand after the blockbuster success of “Barbie,” which was the highest-grossing movie of 2023 and nominated for eight Academy Awards. Up next, the company is producing Wilde’s new Christmas comedy “Naughty” for Universal Pictures.

LuckyChap’s other major projects include the Oscar-winning dark comedy “I, Tonya,” and Emerald Fennell’s features, “Promising Young Woman” and “Saltburn.” It most recently backed the Sundance coming-of-age film “My Old Ass,” which sold to Amazon MGM Studios for $15 million.

“Amsterdam” First Look

“Amsterdam” First Look

DEADLINE – The all-star film from David O. Russell is now titled Amsterdam, Disney theatrical boss Tony Chambers said Wednesday at CinemaCon.

The 20th Century Studios movie is about three friends, this despite a big cast that includes Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, John David Washington, Rami Malek, Zoe Saldana, Mike Myers, Timothy Olyphant, Michael Shannon, Chris Rock, Anya Taylor-Joy, Andrea Riseborough, Matthias Schoenaerts, Alessandro Nivola, Taylor Swift and Robert De Niro.

The pic is set during the early 20th century, a period film that looking at the trailer boasts the rock-and-roll absurdist vibe and high jinks of Russell’s crime comedy American Hustle.

In the trailer, De Niro is skeptically questioning the trio about their past. They are a doctor, a nurse and an attorney — all veterans who met in Belgium. A title card reads, “A lot of this actually happened.” Cue The Who’s “Join Together With the Band” and Bale’s voice-over, which tells us, “We formed a pact and swore to protect each other no matter what. But sometimes life is perfect until it’s not.”

The trailer climaxes with Rock, Bale and Swift standing around a coffin. “You have a dead white man in the box,” Rock says to Bale. “Who do you think is going to get in trouble for that? The Black guy.”

The New Regency pic is currently dated for November 4.

“Barbie” First Look

The first look of Margot as Barbie is here! The film is set to hit theaters from July 21, 2023.

DEADLINEBarbie, Warner Bros.’ Greta Gerwig-directed Mattel movie, will hit theaters July 21, 2023, the studio said today during its CinemaCon session in Las Vegas. The pic will take over the date previously occupied by Warners’ hybrid live-action/animation title, Coyote vs. Acme.

That Dave Green-directed pic is currently undated as production continues. John Cena, Will Forte and Lana Condor star.

The plot is under wraps.

Barbie has been in development for quite some time, initially at Sony with Anne Hathaway and Amy Schumer circling the titular role before the project segued to Warner Bros. Ryan Gosling stars as Barbie’s b.f. Ken, with Will Ferrell, Simu Liu, America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Issa Rae also starring. Gerwig and Noah Baumback co-wrote the screenplay
